4x4 problem
I have a 2000 Z71 and my service FWD light keeps coming on when I driving down the highway in 2WD. I have have also had problems shifting in and out of FWD. A service tech told my that it was probly my 4WD selector switch on the dash. Anybody else had this problem.
EVERYONE with a pushbutton 4WD on the dash has this problem. (S I G H) That's why all the serious 4-wheelers have manual floor-mounted shifters.
The cow's out of the barn for your current vehicle, but if you can't put up with a manual 4WD selector(for whatever reason) you probably don't really need 4WD.
If you're serious, and you intend to do offroad driving in the future, it would probably be a good idea to be sure your next truck has a manual 4WD selector on the floor.
The solenoids(actuators?) in the automatics stick if they aren't used almost daily.

Replaced the encoder motor/transfer case motor on my customers 2004 chevy silverado. Problem solved. Thankyou therewolf for your arrogant answer. It was no help at all. I am sure in your world there are two ways to do things....the wrong way and your way.
Well Chevymech, I'm sorry you feel that way. The truth is stiff, and it hurts, sometimes.
But I feel even sorrier for your customers, if you are telling them that pushbutton 4WD is
dependable, or advisable.
Ask around. Or do a thread search into how many people on this site, for example, are having trouble engaging their 4WD with automatic(dash) shifters, as opposed to manual floor shifters.
I severely apologize if this rubs people the wrong way, but should we just lie to people and whistle a happy tune like a car salesman? IMO it's much kinder to let people know if the equipment is POS before they throw their money away on more of the same. Do we really want people to have equipment(that they believe is perfectly fine) which is going to fail them when they need it the most?
It's bad enough that 4WD is an expensive option, all-around, when it's working properly. What a fantastic expense is added to that when it's not dependable.
I went the pushbutton route a while back, and it froze up on me, too. When I got my new vehicle, (even though I don't absolutely "need" 4WD) I decided if I was going to have it, I wanted to be sure it was dependable, so in the few instances when I do use it, it functions properly.
