Default 86 Chevy Scotsdale distributor wiring

I have a new crate engine in my truck now. This green wire coming from the distributor side plug has just shown up to me. My truck was originally a 305 with all the wiring. I had my mechanic install a 350 summit engine. My mechanic died last month. I noticed this green wire and hope yall can tell me where it goes. As of now I cant tell any difference in the performance of engine. Maybe I don't need this wire?

Thanks. I forgot to mention in my posting that it is a hot wire with plenty of spark.Do you have any idea where it was connected .I just don't. see any place that it came loose from . It looks like its a factory wire and every wiring diagram I have been able to find shows that the only green wire in that are goes to the thermostat. My factory dash thermostat is working just fine without that wire so I'm puzzled. I have had this engine for 4 or 5 years but havent used my truck much. I do keep it clean under the hood and I know I would have seen it before now if it was loose and sticking out like it is. Ive been told to just cap it off which I did today but I'm still hoping to hear from yall where it goes. Thanks again for taking time to answer me. Big Nick ps: most of the garages around here dont even know how to work on a FINE old CHEVY truck like mine but I'm still lookin around. .

If it is running without it, it's ok. Yes green wire to sending unit, but not to the distributor. It IMO is a ground, and anywhere on the engine frame is fine.

I believe you 100%. It is running just fine and all blowers and things work ok. Only thing that I have to repair is the windshield washer pump. I t wasnt workin long before I found the green wire.I guess if no one has an exact answer as to where it came loose from Ill just cap it and be done with it or fix up a nice ground spot for it. I guess I worry about stuff like that to much. I used my circut tester light and when I touched the bare end of wire there was a heck of a spark. It didnt blow my tester fuse so I guess grounding is ok to do.
