Default 98 Shift mechanism install

I picked up a 98 chevy c1500 350 this evening and I will be needing to fix the mess the previous owner made of the shifter. The previous owner even left me a new unit like this (https://www.autozone.com/collision-b...22304_0_0_1277) but apparently wasn't up to the repair himself. I have to push or pull the remaining piece of metal attached to the gear cable from the mechanism the select the gear i want. I can't find a youtube video or anything on this specific install so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I just have no idea how to 1. disconnect the gear cable from the old mechanism and attach it to the new one 2. how to mount and install the new mechanism and 3. where does that little wire or linkage shown in the part page. I will include pictures to show the state of it as i received it.
Thanks so much.

I got the new shifter installed and hooked back up to gear cable and the other linkage on the right (range selector?) What and where does the little plunger hook up?
