Default 99 camaro misfire

Hello everyone! I have a huge problem and it has me completely baffled. I have a 99 camaro 3.8 (my wife's car) with 135xxx miles. I was going to do a tune up on it, but quickly realized how much of a pain it was, and decided not to do it right now. I did take off one plug and wire (first plug on pass. side). After I replaced that one plug and wire, I fired up the car and it would not start. When I finally did get it started, it ran really rough. I put the old plug and wire back on, but no change. While it was running, I disconnected the plug wires from the first ignition coil block, and no change. I disconnected a third plug wire and it died. I then replaced the first ignition coil because I thought it was bad, but still no change. The exhaust smells like a burned firework, which I have never smelled before. The car was running just fine yesterday and was not started until i did all of this today. This is what baffles me. How can a car run fine one minute and run like complete crap the next even though I put it back together the exact same way? I know the wires are snapped on to the plugs and the coils, so they are getting contact. I have VERY limited funds, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a code reader on order and should be here next week, so I don't know yet what codes it is throwing, but the check engine light is flashing (obviously). Thanks!!
