99 Tahoe Vortec 5.7 Problem
Hi all.
My wife has a 99 tahoe (350) vortec 5.7. When starting in the morning or after it sets all day, there is a loud tick sounding almost like a collapsed lifter. Seems after vehicle warms up a little while it stops almost as if it has pumped up. I removed, flushed and changed the oil. It eliminated the problem for a little while and now it is getting cold out and it has started again doing the same as above.
My question is this: Are collapsed lifters a common problem with a vortec? If not, has anyone experienced anything like this?
Any thoughts on this??
Thanks
Andy

It couldn't hurt to try a can of restore or seafoam. I'm not really a big fan of "liquid cures", but I make an exception with those two products. They seem to do what they claim to do.

I have a similar problem if not the same problem and I finally found a solution.

RE: 99 Tahoe Vortec 5.7 Problem
Had the same problem on my 96 5.7L. Went to a heavier weight motor oil to give it a short term fix, but eventually pulled the motor. Worked for about 1 month and then start the embarrassing knocking and ticking. My mechanic advised me that the engine was toast. Wish I had seen this issue on Piston Slap prior to spending money on a new engine or at least, I could have had GM pay for my engine.
