Default AC problem

I have a 2008 chevy silverado the ac just quits working when engine gets hot engine is not overheating compressor just stops and when i push the ac button to turn it back on it just flashes and goes off any ideas is there a relay or something that may be going bad and goes off when gets hot or is compressor going bad? AC works when i first start engine and works for an hour or so ,would hooking up to diagnostic tell me whats going on?

is the fan running when the a/c is on? and yes having a scanner on the vehicle can give you a ton of helpful information

Is there any difference in cooling performance relative to driving speed? Does the AC performance drop off when the engine temperature is rising above normal?
