Default Active Management - Range Technology Device

Hi All, As I have found this forum and the discussions so helpful I decided to join this forum so I could share my info regarding my new (old) 07 Suburban. I bought truck earlier this year with 95,000 miles. It was a super well maintained and immaculate Georgia truck. Since getting it I have driven 3800 miles which included a run from Georgia to Montreal to haul my old 82 Datsun ZX back. A 27 hour 1200 mile journey hauling 5000 lbs. Surprisingly a very comfortable trip except for the crappy roads in PA.

In reading about this Active Management system and all the potential problems there may be I have decided to install the Range device and see how the oil consumption changes. I will also install the update rocker cover. I wish I had more data but I do have at least one oil change to use as my reference. Changed it at 97,000 miles (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30) and 3800 miles later I burned 1 quart. Acceptable by GM standards but ridiculous when I think about my old Honda that used NO oil in 6000 miles. I also record my fill ups and fuel mileage (something that I have been doing all my life thanks to my pop) so I have a good idea as to fuel mileage.

I will look forward to sharing my experiences with you all and hopefully these discussions will help us keep our trucks running. My friend has a 2013 Suburban with 112,000 miles and she is now dealing with a failing engine. This truck is burning 2 quarts in 1000 miles and she will need the dreaded engine rebuild I think. I can't help but think had she turned off the AM system whether she would be dealing with this issue.

'07 Suburban with 225k.
Since I bought the truck with 100k, I felt as though 1 quart every 2,500 miles was excessive consumption, but I just dealt with it.
I've started to see some blue smoke at startup which would lead me to believe that the consumption is on the rise. I've read about the AFM disable using the Range device and haven't seen a downside.
My question is: will the device help reduce oil consumption for a 5.3 that's starting to consume more oil than in the past? I know that there's a lot of opinions out there, but I wanted to hear from an actual case study.
Did you end up installing the Range device?
Thanks,
JP

Hi JP, sorry to hear about the blue smoke. I installed the device at (I think) 98,000 miles. I have a little over 105,000 on the Burbman now. Honestly I can't say the oil burn has gotten better or not but then again I have not driven long enough and there wasn't a lot of burn in the first place. I also don't know if the updated rocker cover made a difference too. All that being said my bud and I (we both work in the motorcycle industry) didn't think the whole concept of the V 4/8 made any sense and we questioned the effect on the engine. Just putting the range device in made me feel better. I hated seeing the engine switching from 8 to 4 and back constantly. I keep thinking about the Pistons bouncing up and down with exhaust gases trapped in the cylinder. I honestly don't know if the device will help reduce the blue smoke but it sure would be interesting to see. Do you have the updated rocker? I think it should be changed too. I'll be doing another oil change in a month and I will make a more accurate analysis. So far the oil burn is minimum. I think the product is worth the price. It has worked fine. of course if you have mechanical issues like worn guides I suppose the device won't make a difference. It would be interesting to see what each plug looks like and compare that to which cylinders are affected by the AFM. Let me know what you learn. Cheers!
