Adapter for towing HHR
Greetings all. I have an 09 HHR that I tow with my motorhome on a dolly. I am looking for a brake/tail light plug in adapter for under the hood so I can just plug the M/H lights up there. Is there such an adapter? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know of an Adaptor which is available for that.
You could run separate wires back past your HHR Turn Signal and Brake Switch, and connect them to a separate Plug/Connector, however...
I don't think you'll have a problem with the Tail Lights, but it depends on how the HHR Turn Signal Switch is set up.
One way to test that is...
Find one of the Brake Light Wires past the HHR TS/Brake switches.
Take a jumper from your Hot Battery terminal and energize that wire.
If only one Brake Light lights, then you can have Turn Signals and Brake Lights. If both light, then you can only have Brake Lights. IF both light, then each time you turn on your RV Turn Signal, the HHR Brake Lights will flash/blink together, just like they were on Emergency duty.
Or, You could build your own...

Vehicle 1 is the Towing Vehicle
Vehicle 2 is the Towed Vehicle
Parts:
The Connector between the Vehicles is the standard 4 Pin Trailer Connector.
The Relays (2) for Vehicle 2 Controls are standard 12vdc DPST.
Inlne Fuse (1)
Instructions:
The L/R Brake Light Wires should be cut/interrupted and the appropriate L/R Voltage Supply Relay wires connected to those.
The 12 vdc Supply, may be taken from any constant available source on Vehicle 2.
The Tail Light Power Wire, may run through and connect to any available Tail Light Wire common to both Tail Lights on Vehicle 2.
The Ground Wire should be common for both Relays and Vehicles, and may be bonded to Vehicle 2 at any convenient point.
Description of Operation:
You will be cutting and inserting the normally closed contacts of the Relays, in the respective Left and Right Wires to Vehicle 2 Brake Lights.
When there is no connection from Vehicle 1, Vehicle 2 Tail, Brake and Turn Signal Lights will operate normally.
When connected, the signal from the normal source of Vehicle 1, operates the respective Relays only, and through the Voltage Source of Vehicle 2 operates the appropriate function (Brake/Turn Signal) just like they would under normal operation.
The Tail Light connection should be tied/added on to any available Wire running back to the Tail Lights on Vehicle 2 and Fuse Size commensurate with ampacity required for the specific vehicle.
The Ground Wire should be common between both vehicles.
The Relays may be placed in Vehicle 2, under the Hood or inside the cab, whichever is convenient.
There will be no need, nor should you turn any lights on, on Vehicle 2. And, Vehicle 2 should not be operated while electrically connected to Vehicle 1.

There are such a large variety of these Twelve Volt, Direct Current, Double Pole Single Throw Relays which will work, you need to do a search on the type, depending on where you will place them in Vehicle 2. They can be open style if inside, or closed if under the hood. You can select those which have Plug In Bases, where if one fails, you don't have to rewire anything, just plug a new relay in.
Notes:
1) When Vehicle 2 is wired as directed above, it should be able to be Towed by any Vehicle which has a correctly wired common 4 Pin Connector installed.
2) If Vehicle 1 has a different/larger 6/7 Pin Connector, there are Adaptors to provide the 4 Pin output connector.
3) It is highly recommended, that you use/buy spare 4 Pin Connector Halves (cut wires off), to connect/cover/protect the existing pins of any Connectors unavoidably exposed to the weather/elements (this applies to both Vehicles when not in use).
4) You also may "snub/tie" the 4 Pin connector for Vehicle 2 under the hood, or in the Front Air Ram area for the Radiator, and fabricate an 4 Pin Extension Cord, to connect Vehicles 1/2.
