Default Cat Back Exhaust Question

I'm planning on modifying the exhaust system on my 04 Avalanche. I've looked through entire cat back exhaust systems, and I really don't want to put that kind of money into it. I also don't see what the difference would be between an over priced exhaust system and piecing my own system together with 3" diameter Dynomax intermediate and tail pipes with a Flowmaster Super 40 series muffler. The Dynomax piping is supposed to be a better quality pipe that enhances flow. Would this not have the same positive effects as purchasing the entire system?
Plus I can do this for about half the price of purchasing a while system. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
