Default Catal. Converter

My converter for my 1999 Chevy Malibu burned out after a month it got replaced. Mechanic said it was because my engine wasn't properly tuned. I changed the oil, fuel filter, spark plugs, wires and air filter but I need a complete tune up. Could it be a distributor cap problem, if there is one? I really want to find out the problem before deciding where to spend the money. Your help will be appreciated. Thank You

You do not have a distributor. Did the cat melt down and cause the car to run poorly or not at all? If you did all that stuff what does he propose for a tune up? Is or was the check engine light comming on? If so for how long? What codes? May have been a cheap after market part. How many miles were on the orginal cat? What happened to it? Did it melt down and cause the car not to run?

The old cat. was melt down but the car ran but with alot of noise coming from the exhaust system and it had very slow acceleration. exhaust flex pipe was pretty rot so I got the exhaust flex pipe and cat replaced. When I asked the machanic what he purposed as a tune up he told me that spark plugs, spark plug wires and distributor cap has to be changed. The Check Engine light never came on until I drove the car for about 8 miles and turned off the car and turned it back to ACC a couple minutes later. I haven't turned on the car since. The original cat and flex pipe came with the vehicle, which I purchased used in November with 115,000 miles on it. When the flex pipe and cat were replaced the car had about 115,600 miles.

To add on to my previous message, the cat was an universal part that did cost me less to be put on the car. Also, my flex pipe is looking new still.
