I recently started working on my 1989 Chevrolet Caprice to better understand it mechanically. During my inspection, I noticed a small hose that leaks coolant when the engine is running. It previously had a cork inserted, but the cork was expelled after acceleration, causing the leak to resume. I was considering reinstalling another cork, but I’d like to understand the purpose of that opening and whether it could cause any problems if sealed again.
It’s a bit difficult for me to describe the exact location, but it’s situated near the distributor cap and the transmission oil dipstick, as shown in the attached photos.
This is the first time I’ve examined the engine in detail, even though the car has been in my family for years, if anyone has any thoughts on this they would be greatly appreciated
That's a heater hose bypass port on the intake manifold. It's not meant to be open.
Do not cork it. The cork will just fail again.
You need to find the correct small metal pipe that connects there, with a hose clamp. A parts store should have it or you can get one from a junkyard. It's a common GM engine fitting.

I appreciate your answering my post. By any chance can you help me figure out in more details what your are reffering? Maybe share like a photo of the metal pipe you mentioned? And also, just to clarify, it should not be open, but wouldn't the same happened with an open pipe?
