Default Clunk/thud When Shifting

Occasionally there is a thud/clunk when my truck shifts from 1st to 2nd. I've noticed that this seems to be affected by driving distance. After my truck has been running for 10-15 miles on the freeway/highway it will make a loud thud/clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. It doesn't always do it. Most times the issue is solved by stopping and turning the ignition off. This first happened about 5 years ago and then stopped for a period of time and has just started again. it seems to come and go and occasionally the check engine light will come on. Any ideas?

Vehicle
Year: 97
Model: 1500
Engine: 5.7L V8
Miles: 92K
Tran: Auto

Probably have a bad 1-2 clutch pack.

Unfortunately, the transmission will have to be removed and torn down to replace a bad clutch pack. Might be better to find a good used transmission instead.
