Default Do you rely on your VIN when ordering parts ?

Hi, I've just removed the power steering pump on my 98 Express van. Before doing so I telephoned a few suppliers quoting my VIN and they all told me I needed a Cardone 20860 pump, which I then ordered.
After removal of the old pump I've compared it with the pics on Rockauto and it is not a Cardone 20860 but a Cardone 208751 which are completely different.
Have you any idea why this happens, the van is all original and hasn't any mods ?
This is an inconvenience as being in the UK I've ordered from a specialist US car parts supplier over here and will not get the 'wrong' pump delivered until tomorrow, then I will have to send it back before the supplier will then send me the 'correct' one ! (I'm going on a camping trip on Friday ?).
I suppose the moral of this story is 'remove the parts first, compare with other pics, then order'.
Just out of curiosity, would you order the new pump with the 'EVO Component' or just replace the pump (I think its just the pump thats bad)?
One more thing, there is also an AC Delco pump available , I have never heard of Cardone so are they reliable ?
Thanks for any feedback or advice regarding the pump.

First, AC Delco is nothing to write home about. They're pretty much GM OEM, which is generally farmed out to the lowest bidder.

Cardone, on the other hand is a known quality name brand.

As to the VIN, the dealer uses this part for ordering, inventory control, and parts specification, but very few others use it as a parts identification paradigm.

Go by vehicle Year, Make, and Model. Know your vehicle and drivetrain. Compare apples to apples, because in many instances, manufacturers use more than one type of the same part in the same year vehicle. Sometimes it's to avoid production delays, sometimes it's a mid-year change, and sometimes it's something else. Many times the parts are NOT interchangeable.

Your only solace(Being in the UK) lies in the fact that you are closer to Europe than the rest of us. Perhaps you need to track parts down by manufacturer location, and attempt to contact these more local manufacturers yourself.

Thanks for your reply.
Just for the record, I ordered the right part afterall. Turns out one part number is for the pump and the other part number is for the complete pump inc the reservoir !!
As I was looking at pics online I thought I messed up but thankfully I haven't.
