Default electric fuel pump question, 89 celebrity

Chevy celebrity 89: 4 cylinder, auto. Electric fuel pump question, 89 celebrity
Does anyone know how the electric fuel pump works?
Does it run all the time or does it only come on periodically to bring the pressure up when needed. If the latter how is the on-off operation controlled?
If a fault caused it to run all the time, would that harm anything?
Thnx, Dick

The pump should run constanly when the car is running. If you turn the key on but do not start the car it only runs for a few seconds and does not run again untill you start the car or cycle the key off and on.
