Default engine block numbers (what do they mean)

I have 97 2.2 cavalier with bad engine. I have already tried to put a 95 but could not get spark. I now have a 96 but a few sensors seem to be dif. I have tried finding something on the net that would tell what each number stood for with no luck. The first four on the eight are the same but the last are not. Can someone please give a link or tell what the numbers mean. Thanks
