Default Fuel Pressure and Carburetor

Howdy!

This s my first post on the forum. I've been lurking for a bit without a profile as I've been getting my project car up and running. If I've posted this in the wrong category, just point me in the right direction.

Anyhow I have a '78 el camino on a suburban frame, with a 305 using an Edelbrock 1406 carburetor. It is being fed fuel by an electric in-line fuel pump. The previous pump was too low pressure, and the new one is at about 9PSI. I installed a Summit Racing dead-head style pressure regulator. I could only get the pressure down to about 7 PSI, which is too much for the carburetor.

I then hooked up an "evil energy" branded regulator with a return line. Just got it hooked up last night and turned on the pump. It was reading zero PSI, but fuel was flooding from the top of the carb near the pump arm(?) and flooding the barrels.

I'm going to try to hook op the previous dead-head regulator to see if the result is the same. My instinct is telling me that the current regulator isn't regulating enough, thus causing the lil fountain show... Either that, or it could be because I don't have the vacuum port coming off the top section f the regulator hooked up properly?

Anyhow, I am unsure and this turn-of events has been discouraging

... Have any of you come across anything like this?
