I just purchased a cargo van with a 5.7L 350 motor. When I was inspecting it this afternoon and noticed a hole below the EGR exhaust tube that appeared to be unplugged. More specifically, this is located on the driver's side, towards the end of the exhaust manifold and next to the transmission case.

The previous owner said they installed a new motor 3 months ago. Engine number 12530283. (350 5.7 vortec)

My question is, is this normal? And should I plug it to prevent dirt from getting in it?

If it is not leaking oil, coolant, vacuum or exhaust through the hole then don't worry about it.

 

That's really unusual that someone would leave that like that, but...

Are you sure it really goes into the crankcase, or does it have a "bottom", like it was intended for a Bolt/Stud and Mounting Bracket to be there for some reason.

Try pushing a small screwdriver down into it, and see how deep it is.
Do you see any "smoke/vapor" coming out of it, when the engine's running ?
Is there any Oil or Coolant present ?
If you hold your finger over it while the engine is running, do you feel any pressure/vacuum building up ?

Anyway, given that it is threaded, and apparently there was a Bolt or Fitting in it at some point, you probably could screw a short Bolt in it if you're really concerned with it being open. Then, observe engine and other operations for any unexpected/unwanted change.
