My first time! Thermostat? waterpump?
(1998 chevy s10 pickup) This is my first time tryin to fix this part of my truck. I recently had an oil change, engine flush, and radiator flush. I took an out of state road trip with the truck runnin perfectly the whole way there and back. Now when I drove home from work the other night my heater wasnt working and then my SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came on.... then CHECK GAGES... by the time i was a block away- a loud rattling noise sounded when i accelerated. I parked and my truck was steaming! So i have narrowed it down to my thermostat or my waterpump.
Does anybody have a book for dummies?
Can i fix this myself?

first if you havenbt already done it check the oil ,check waterlevel (when cold), correct if nessary, start up when done and cold ,look for leak's,still making kocking noise put a manual oil pressure gauge on it ,get a chilton or motor manual for spec's on oil pressure .if you have to manual tempature gauge ,for starter's .dont take this wrong but they dont call them idiot light's for nothing .
it appears that you broke it! Overheating causes internal damages!
if it was recent, contact the facility that did your oil change/flush and radiator flush!
they could havelefta connection loose!
