need help with motor swap
i have a 98 k1500 with a 5.7. the block is cracked. i was wondering if i could take my 79 350 block and swap it in to the truck still using the fuel injection. blocks look identical other than the crank has a removable crank sensor. can this be done. all input is welcome. specs on 79 block 60 over vortec heads. need to know what cam to use for the 98 dist.

the older motor will work just fine. check the head alignment pins tho, you may have to swap them. maybe. you will need the crank sensor as it feeds signal for the distributor. you will need to block off the fuel pump on older motor with block off plate, and use the vortec heads. as far as cam, you can use a slightly bigger than stock cam, however you may need to have computer reprogrammed for it. also, try to run the vortec's lifters and lifter retainers, or measure for pushrod. otherwise, it's pretty straight swap.

dont forget about the knock sensor... you will have to also make sure your vortec heads and intake bolt to that block. otherwise tune out the egr system too... basicly you need to switch everything over that is obd2. example... I would have issues running a pre-96 454 block because the older version doesn't have knock sensors or any other obd2 toys. lucky me they made 454 all the way to 01.
