Need help with some valve train decisions
Hi all,
I am just starting to put together what I hope will be a nice small block for my 67 el camino. I bought a 4 bolt main 350 from the mid-seventies, sent it to the machine shop, had it bored out by .10 and bought some flat top pistons for it. I have a set of 1999 Vortec heads for it, and I plan on fuel injection and now I have to figure out all the valve related stuff.
My plan is to use LS6 valve springs and aftermarket seals to give me more room for valve lift. Everything that I've read on line says that works - no machining at all. The stock springs, seals and retainers on sbc vortec heads don't really allow for very much valve lift and so I'd like to put a beefier cam in it so, so far, that's my plan.
I'm wondering what other folks think about a choice for a camshaft. My understanding is that converting to a roller cam is a big deal and expensive but the benefits are impressive. I'd appreciate any opinions. I've been musing about all this for a long time, but it's getting down to brass tacks now. I have to make some decisions and get this engine built.
Thanks a lot, and I'm looking forward to the discussion!
