Old Chevy 350 high idle before gas
Hi, sorry if this has been asked a lot I did a google search and couldn’t find the exact problem or the answers I was looking for..
I have an 87 el Camino, it was my dads and had been sitting for years since he passed… the engine looks 100% stock but if I remember correctly I believe it was actually replaced by the Chevy dealership in the early 90s with a brand new Chevy 350 after the original 305 blew…
anyway I just got it started and I’m having a little high idle issue… when I start the car it idles really high but if I hit the gas and rev it it immediately goes back down to a low idle.. it also doesn’t matter how long it does sit there it will continue to idle high until you rev it… my neighbors think I’m reving at them lol… I’m also pretty sure this was happening before it was sitting for years as I remember my dad doing the same
I can’t see any missing or broken vacuum lines anywhere…is this just normal? I know it’s not a big deal but it’s annoying and embarrassing to have to rev it every time…
im pretty ignorant when it comes to carbureted cars….

If the hi idle cam on the carburetor is staying in high position because the choke is not letting it come down except when the engine is gunned and more air forces the choke fully open, the choke heater either isn't working or the choke spring is misadjusted. If you remove the air cleaner when the engine is warmed up you should see the choke butterfly fully vertical /open. If not, either adjusted to rich or dirty and needs to be cleaned and freed up. If choke coil is not getting heated, let us know.
