Default Possible bad Torque Converter?

I have a 2000 Cavalier 2.2L 3 speed tranny I believe….
I was driving down the highway at 65-70 mph and all of a sudden i heard a loud noise and the car spudderd! Loosing power and loosing speed. I eventually got down to around 30-40 mph which i could maintain, but it wouldn't go any faster!
if it got over 40 mph it would sputter and act like a rev limiter is kicking it!
I got it home and it will idle fine but you rev it up it sputters in any gear, including neutral!
So I am thinking my engine is fine , but I think i burned up my torque converter?
Any ideas????
