Default removing glue from plastic

I have had my G20 for 10 years and have decided to start restoring it to original condition. A former owner at one time or another decided to glue rubberised fabric (fabric on the inside, rubber on the outside) over the original dashboard, doghouse etc. I have recently pulled the dashboard out and pulled most of the fabric off. The problem is much of the glue he used is still stuck to the dash along with fibres from the fabric. I started removing the glue with acetone, but realized that was a little harsh and would probably eat through the finish of the dashboard and might kill me as well. I have checked on-line and have seen both rubbing alcohol and WD-40 suggested. Does anyone have any experience to share?

Well WD-40 works great. In just over an hour most of the glue residue changed to jelly and could be wiped off with a cloth. I will leave some on over night for the areas were the glue was particularly thick. In addition to getting the glue off, it left the vinyl clean and shiny.

You can also use wd40 to remove any adhesive on the exterior. Just wash and wax the surface afterwards. I suggest that you clean and put dressing on your dashboard to bring back its protection.
