Default replaced alternator on 1972 350 blazer and now gauge goes all the way up with rpm's

Bought a 1972 Blazer that sat for eight years, worked on it for last ten weeks, replaced alternator at AutoZone and see the gauge run all the way up with rpm's. Sits at center of gauge at idle but I saw small wires near battery get hot to touch today as I warmed it up on high idle to set timing today. Anyone have this experience? Don't want to burn this sucker down.

Did you replace the battery? If it sat for 8 years the battery must also need replacing!
