Default SBC Noob with a maybe obvious question

Hi folks,
I acquired a SBC 350 from Jegs to work on a street rod project. At this point I have a couple of maybe obvious questions, but 'the google machine' is not being helpful.

The first question is, must I have a spacer between the crankshaft pulley and the balancer or will that depend on the WP and alternator bracket mounting type?

The next question is what in the heck drives the gear and spindle on the distributor which in turn drives the oil pump? Is there supposed to be a ring gear on something on it that marries up to the cam? I got a distributor and there is no such on there at present. Sorry if that is too obvious, but it is a real head scratch to me at this point.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, replies.
Cheers,

Never have seen a spacer between the pulley and balancer. There should be a gear on the end of the distributor. The cam has a gear on it that drives the distributor which in turn drives the oil pump from the bottom of the distributor

Same here, if you have to adjust for belts, do it at the pulley.

Thanks again to both for the great input. Very clear to me now. I wonder if the engine even shipped with the OP drive shaft. Will check that out tomorrow for sure.
cheers
