Default Trans help.

I have a 1986 chevy c10 2wd pickup that I just rebuilt a 350 and changed over to a turbo 400 trans. I can't get the auto colum to work correct with the trans. If I set the coluim in park the trans will not go past drive, or if I set the trans into low gear and retighten the linkage it will not go back into park. Can someone help or has anyone had this problem before.
Thanks, Shawn
