Default Valve job

I know that a jeep guy doesnt belong here but my 86 jeep Cherokee has a 2.8 V6 and I believe it needs a valve job.I just got this jeep a few months ago from a friend (some friend) but it was free and virtually rust free and a great interior. The jeep sat for almost 5 years with the occasional start. It has a ping rattle in the upper driver side of motor and burns a good amount of oil. To get to the point what does it roughly cost for a valve job? Or does anybody have any suggestions on what to check? Really thankful for help.
Joe

I believe that 2.8 is a GM motor used in some CJ's .....You could google around in Jeep boards as some of these CJ Jeepers have been working with these motors I'm sure.
