Default bad throttle body vs pedal sensor

my 07 hhr just started havin difficulty starting it will turn over and when it sounds like its about to start i give it a little gas and it immediately dies. it has been idiling a little rough and seems to be losin power over the past few months. i am told this may be the throttle body or the pedal sensor is there any way to tell which may be causing the problem because these parts are not returnable and the throttle body is covered under and the pedal sensor is not. single mom low on funds can anyone help??? also is there a safe way to clean out the sensor without havin to replace it? thx
