Default hhr motor swap

I have a 2006 2.2 L hhr with 158xxx miles, want to put a motor with less miles in it. What motors are compatible, I see the 2.4L. just wondering if you can put any motor that come out of an hhr.

You aren't going to be able physically fit anything besides an I-4 in there, so your choices are likely anther 2.2L, a 2.4L, or the 2.0L in either its Turbo or SC flavors. It would be more involved to change to a different engine, but I think there's info on the Cobalt forums on it. The engine itself could come from a Cobalt, Ion, or even a Malibu, as well as an HHR. You'd need a matching ECU for it, and there are differences for Auto and Manual Trans, but I don't know all the details.

be careful to make sure you don't get a flex fuel engine or you'll have to change your wire harness. Make sure you get an identical engine. My hhr was not originally a flex fuel vehicle, but I've replaced the motor, cpu, and the main harness
