ABS Sensor and related consequences
Hello,
I have a 2014 Chev Impala LT 3.6 V6. Just under 114K kms. Recently while driving home on the highway, I received a series of error messages - started with "Service Stabilitrak", then "Service Power Steering" and then the ABS light came on. Being the "good" Chevy owner, I contacted the dealership I purchased the vehicle from (new in 2014). Arranged to bring vehicle in a couple days later as they were very busy. Took vehicle in very early in the morning, received call from service advisor early afternoon stating that the vehicle needed 4 things:
1. Needs a tuneup. PARDON? It has less than 114K kms (about 78K miles) and it needs a TUNEUP? Advisor said that could probably wait.
2. Needs a fuel system flush. Again - PARDON? See above mileage. Has only ever had Esso fuel.
3. Needs a new hub driver rear as ABS sensor is gone in it. Okay, that makes sense.
4. Needs Power Steering Control Module needs to be reprogrammed. Again, PARDON??? This was programmed initially at the factory and again in July 2014 for a recall. HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE PSCM NEED TO BE REPROGRAMMED??? I asked the advisor this exact question. I trusted him to give me honest and fair and understandable answers. The answer I received - "It has to be done". Again, I asked for clarification. Same answer - "It has to be done".
Fine - as I said, I trusted him.
Received a callback four minutes (yes - 4 minutes) later stating that the car is ready to be picked up. Total for checking out what "needs to be done" and the reprogramming? $477.
Did some research on my own. It turns out that when an ABS sensor goes bad, the system in the car automatically disables power steering. I called Chevrolet Canada about this. 3 weeks later, I get a callback with "the final answer" - this was a different repair than was done in July 2014 and it's my responsibility to pay for it. No! Imagine that! I thought dealing with a company like Chevrolet would deliver a certain level of honest and credibility instead of lies and stupidity.
So, if this happens to you and your Impala STAY AWAY FROM DEALERS!!! Go online (Amazon), buy a hub for $130, install the damn thing yourself and do what I'm doing - go buy an Audi or Volkswagen and leave Chevy as far away from you as you possibly can - you're going to get screwed completely with no recourse whatsoever.
