if you just need to access powertrain codes....launch c reader vi is inexpensive under $100. If you need chassis, body and restraint codes you are into $300 and the best out there for that is autoenginuity laptop based scan tools.
Check out the Foxwell NT630 GM, it is for GM vehicles only, is bi-directional, and does almost everything a dealer scanner does. It costs about $170. You can download additional makes for about $ 60 each. Updates are available for lifetime for free. I believe that it is still on a holiday sale at the Foxwell web sight for $149.95.
