ImpalaWhile undergoing many facelifts in its history, the Impala has proved itself to both civilians and police forces as one of the most capable 4-door cars GM has ever offered. Currently moving towards its 10th generation the Impala is one of the longest lasting and popular models.
New to this forum. Just started on restoring a chevy impala custom coupe 1968 with a 307 engine. I would like to ask your help in determining what upgrades I could do on this little engine. Of course not going through the roof with the budget. I was thinking to upgrade the cylinder heads and cam shaft adding an intake and bigger carb. I just need your expertise on selecting the right parts. Thanks for your help. Engine number is 3932371.
I will also start keeping track on the restoration for this car on this thread.

The cowl tag will tell you what it was "born with", as far as a 305. If you want to upgrade, I'd recommend an engine swap, you're not going to get anything out of a 305, one thing is it is an el camino.

allot of people may think these motors are junk or may even ask you why waste your time it's not a 350 or 383.
However what's cool about them is they are a 283 block with a 327 crank and they are easily capable of 300+ hp just with other stock heads and mild cam and 4 barrel intake & carb.
the cons of the chev 307 they had 76cc combustion chamber heads with little valves 1.74 intake and 1.5 exhaust and the got a bad rap because of chev cutting corners and had soft cams that wiped the lobes off.
now what i would recommend for a cheap build is find yourself a set of 80's 305 heads with either the last 3 casting numbers 416 or 601. The 416 heads came on 305's that were in like camaros, firebirds, monte carlo ss with the 305 H.o the 601 heads are more commonly found in 80's trucks with 305's the 305 heads will have a .100 bigger intake valve @ 1.84 intake and 1.5 exhaust and a 52cc-58cc combustion chamber which will put the 307 around 9.5:1 compression depending on head gasket thickness and other variables. Then I would recommend an edelbrock cam & lifter kit part# 2102 on this motor followed by a 4 barrel dual plane intake and 600cfm minimum to 700cfm max carb with 1 5/8 long tube headers with 2 1/2 collector. And you'll make a minimum of 290hp
if you have time Google 307 danger mouse I think it was car craft magazine did an article on a chev 307 they built.
then there is vice grip garage on YouTube where he built a 307 as well with the 416 heads I'm talking about
