chevy 409
Hi guys. This is my first post on this forum. I have a chance to buy a 64 Impala SS 409 and I am wondering where to look for the casting numbers and what the casting numbers are to check the originality of the motor. Is it the numbers in the VIN or will only casting numbers show up? Also I'm wondering what the car is worth. I checked a price guide and it said that the base price in condition 3 is $12,150 plus 25 percent for the SS package, 15 for the drag pack and 50 percent for the 409. The car is in ok shape little rust on the quarters, interior good needs headliner, seats good, console, no real rust problems, new brakes and master, motor runs great,am/fm radio that works, tinted glass, remote window, color butternut yellow (think I can buff it out) please send me a post. What do you think the car is worth on the East Coast?
welcome to the forum.
below is a link to search casting numbers for the 409. it's also distinguished by the unique head design on the exhaust side. as far as value, hard to say without actually seeing the car. you've gotten a jump on this by doing a little research yourself. i would research further, then offer a fair price. these cars have a wide range depending on condition and area. good luck!

Thanks for the reply. The car is in what I consider #3 condition. It has ps,pb,pw, tack in dash, nice interior (needs headliner) but the one that is in it is Ok not hanging. There is some rust on the quarters but not much. One door has some bondo in it but the guy is throwing in a replacement. Engine is strong,it has new brakes and master does not overheat and lifters are quiet. It has a hot cam in it and an automatic two speed trans. Has all the hubcaps (one is slightly damaged a little) dual exhaust. Some rust on fenders near the bottom. All chrome and glass is there and undamaged. Steering wheel is in one piece no cracks. Dash is cracked ( is it difficult to replace?) No rust in floor pans to speak of trunk no rust. Has original jack. Color is Butternut? Have the original owners manual. Has 128 K miles, bumpers are good but need to be chromed. So what do you think it's worth on the East coast
Thanks for your time

Well, with the short you have in it now and the power slush transmission, how about 500 bucks? Just joking...Be careful with that tranny, there are/were not to good. I had 6 cyl that I torn them up in..Not really made for a 409 with all that power.
good find roger, the tach in the dash is actually rare as hell! take a look at the frame they are notorious for rusting out, the 2 spd powerglide is actualy a very good trans for drag racing, dman must have gotten ones that were used hard before him or something, people still use it for racing, again wicked find roger
