Default pass lock ? 2002 impala

My 2002 impala dose the same thing,sceurity light comes on and car wont start for 10 min . will a resistor in the pass lock loop do the fix,or do I have to buy a new key cylinder

You wont need a new key cylinder the cylinder is not the issue with these it is the passlock switch on the back side of the switch and the resistor does the same thing the passlock switch does when you turn your key on. Thus bypassing the switch which is almost always what fails . The system is like the old passlock 1 systems that had the little black resistor built in the key. Just now it is built in a switch connected to the ignition switch instead of being in the key.

I was having the problem with the car not starting for over a year now and I took the ignition apart and cleaned it with sand paper and the security light is no longer on and the car is starting fine. It had gott to the point where it was happening a least once a week and I was always worried that it was going to happen in an emergency situation one day but so far so good.
