Default What is a wiring harness?

Today I took my 05 Impala 3.8 to the dealership to have my knock sensors replaced. The dealer told me that they could not fix my car because my wiring harness had been cut. They didn't bother to show me exactly what it was they were referring to. I tried looking on the web for some answers and have been unsuccessful. Please help, I really don't want to give up on my car.

Welcome to the forum,
A wire harness is a term used to describe the wiring and electrical connections to the sensors on the engine... There should be no reason what so ever to have to cut the wire harness as it has a removable connection on it... Unless the harness has previously been damaged and repaired....
Attached is a picture of one of the knock sensors on the 05 Impala with the 3.8L motor...
figure 1 is the sensor figure 2 is the connector...the cooling system does need to be drained in order to replace the sensor(s)
Here is the description of the process

Service Information
2005 Chevrolet Impala | Impala, Monte Carlo (VIN W) Service Manual | Document ID: 838574
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Knock Sensor 1 Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution: Hot engine coolant may cause severe burns. Although the cooling system has been drained, coolant still remains in the engine water jacket. This coolant will drain with the removal of the knock sensor.

Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector (2).
Remove the knock sensor (1).
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important: DO NOT apply thread sealant to sensor threads. The sensor is coated at factory and applying additional sealant will affect the sensors ability to detect detonation.

Install the knock sensor (1).
Tighten
Tighten the knock sensor to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).

Connect the knock sensor electrical connector (2).
Lower the vehicle.
Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
