Default K5 Battery Connections

1983 K5 6.2L Military 12/24V system. Need correct battery terminal connections. Cross-over cable looks like neg-neg but smoked when ignition switch turned to on.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

A description I found says that it was GM’s offering to the CUCV (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) program and designated M1008 for the basic GM model K30903. Gm produced About 70K from 1983-1986. All CUCV vehicles were equipped with GM’s 6.2L J-Series Detroit Diesel V8 engine and a hybrid 12/24 volt, dual battery electrical system that ran the starter, glow plug, etc. and everything else runs off of the 12 V system. Wish I could get a tech manual or at least a wiring diagram

Over the weekend, I was successful in securing a TM and am currently reviewing the wiring schematics. It appears that what I’m working on is an original 12/24v unit that has been converted to a 12v system but still utilizes two 12v batteries connected in parallel. It is advantageous to convert units that found homes at civilian organizations like fire departments, police departments, etc. and ultimately in the private sector for several reasons with the main one being that 24v starters are hard to find and expensive. Hopefully, this ole’ girl will be happily on the road shortly and sipping clean burning biodiesel at 55mph as designed. Cheap biodiesel will help with the low mileage produced from the 4.56:1 rear axel. Biodiesel will help significantly reduce air emissions from the non-emissions GM 6.2L J-series Detroit Diesel V8 engine.
