Default Rear or Side Exhaust for Soft Top?

We have an '88 K-5 with new SoftTopper and pickup tailgate conversion, and I've put some weatherstripping around the tailgate, but not sealed by any means. The old dual exhaust turned out the sides, but I had new duals put on exiting out the back, and it seems like the truck is getting more exhaust smell inside now. My sons theory is that with side exit exhaust the wind would draw it away from the truck better than rear exiting pipes. Anybody know which is better for a soft-top? I think it would be the same issue for trucks with campers? Thanks..
