2001 malibu- starter grinds
Hello everyone
Just signed up today. Thanks to the forum builders for this place to post a problem.
About 6 times a month when I start up my car my starter grinds. It sounds exactly like you expect
if you left the key turned to start to long, but I'm not doing that. I've tried WD-40 in the keyhole,
but I'm not sure that's even where my problem lies.
Here's hoping someone here has heard of a simple cure
Thanks in advance

RE: 2001 malibu- starter grinds
First ... don't spray WD-40 in the ignition , this will wash away the factory applied lubricant inside the mechanism.
When you turn the key to the start position then let go does it seem to return to the normal run position? Or do you do have to turn the key to run position yourself to stop the grinding? If this is the case sounds like the ignition switch may need replacing.
If the ignition switch seems to work properly it may be the starter needs overhauling or replacement. sounds like the drive mechanism for the starter is sticking.
