Default 2001 Malibu steering wheel locked up

My daughters has a 2001 Malibu Maxx V6. Today the steering wheel locked up while driving. Thats scary. She had to turn the car off and restart the car to free it up. Luckly she was not going very fast. Is there any history of others having this problem?

Did it lock up or was it just a case of losing the power steering which makes it seem like it is locked up? Check the power steering fluid. If the level is low then check for leaks.

Sorry I was wrong. It is a 2004 Malibu Maxx. We had it at a garage today and they said we should take it to a Chevrolet dealer because there is a recall on this and we are under the mileage. I tried to do a search on this on this forum, but could not get it to work right.
