Angry 2004 malibu steering problems

So.... MY '04 malibu is busted. Turning the steering wheel has no impact on the direction of the driving wheels. The steering wheel acts likes its a boat steering wheel as it will endlessly turn! This happened when I was backing out of a parking spot. When this occured the DIC reported an airbag warning. Has anyone run into this??

Sounds like the steering shaft broke or feel off. When the wheel was turned to many times one direction the clock spring was then broken.

Thanks MD - Someone suggested that it may be a bad steering rack & pinion. Is that possible? Any idea what I should expect to pay to have it repaired?

The rack should run about $500, not sure about clock spring, never had one replaced.
