Front Shock Absorber Noise Solved
A rattling noise began that appeared to come from the driver side front of my 2002 Malibu Basic. It sounded as though it came from under the dashboard, so I removed the bottom panel and found a connector module had broken free of its velcro support. I re-attached it, but the noise continued.
I checked for loose components in the engine compartment but found none. I examined the driver-side shock absorber but saw nothing wrong with it.
As the noise gradually became louder, I discovered its source was the upper strut mount in the engine compartment. The two top pieces of plastic were grinding together.
I sprayed them with silicone, and the noise abated for a couple of miles and then returned, so I sprayed them with WD-40 and injected grease, and the noise disappeared.
