My '02 malibu won't stay running. When it stalls the fuel pump won't kick on so I crawl under and hit the gas tank and it works for a while. Is it possible to install an inline fuel pump to keep from spending hundreds of dollars and taking the gas tank off if the in-tank fuel pump is not working properly?

 

The best way to fix this problem would be to replace the pump itself. The best way to do it is go on ebay or google shopping and look for the pump replacement not the whole sending unit. AC delco makes these items but for some reason they dont sell to the part stores in dealerships. you can put a 60 Lb fuel pump inline on the system. The time and materials would probably end up ruining the idea for you. Honestly i would buy the pump rebuild kit off of ebay drop the tank and replace the bad part for 2 hours and 50 dollars.
