Default J or M? How do I know which type my Malibu is?

I have a 1999 malibu with the V6 engine. Question is, how do I know if it is a J or an M? From what I know one has more horespower than the other. Is that the only difference?

To verify which engine you have is to look at your vin# and its the 8th digit... It will either be a J or M....

Default Help J or M

I had my motor replace with a used motor about 4 years ago, but I don't know if it's a J or M. Is there a way to look at the motor to tell the difference?

Thanks.

The VIN derivative is located on the engine block in front of the transaxle extension.
