Default Rear drum brake noise

07 LS with 85,000 on it. Started getting a low squalling sound coming from the rear drum brakes. I changed the shoes and the drums themselves looked in very good condition (no grooves and very little wear). When coming to a stop as I get almost completely stopped I get a wer wer wer sound. If I remove wheel and manually adjust the shoes out to where I can barely get the drums on it will stop for a while. Any chance the auto adjusters aren't working and if so why wouldn't they work? I took them out and cleaned them real good and lubed them. The original shoes were actually in ok shape about 50% pad left on them. It's a very aggravating sound.
