Default 2004 Chevy 2500HD fuel tank

I think I need a new sending unit. My fuel guage stopped working (went to "E" and stayed there). I had the cluster rebuilt with new motors for each guage and that did not help. I need to know what that fuel tank has in it as far as equipment goes. Is there a separate sending unit and fuel pump or is it a combined unit? Is there a fuel pump under the hood where the fuel filter is? I'm searching for parts and checking prices but I don't want to buy one thing and find out I needed another. While I have access to the tank, I want to make it all NEW inside. thanks

The fuel pump and the sending unit are all in one. Located in the fuel tank. It is recommended to change the fuel filter when changing the pump. Do not buy one of the cheap off brand units. They do not last. Buy either a Delco or Delphi fuel pump. They are worth the extra money.

Default Fuel sending unit

Thanks for the response. I am also being told that the sending unit can also be what looks like a wiring harness under the hood. Follow this link and it is titled "fuel sender" for 343.35.

you can get a separate sending unit but replace the whole thing; its 10years old...unless you want to do it again in 2 months when the pump fails.

Default Fuel guage issue

Thanks for the feedback. I guess my main question is the fuel pump has the sending unit as part of its makeup? The fuel pump is obviously working because I can drive the truck but the sending unit is defective because the gas gauge reads empty. Does that sound correct? If I buy a unit that has both the sending unit and pump combined then I should be back in business?
