Hello and greetings from German Caprice Fan
Hey Chevy Enthusiasts
I want to introduce myself and my 1988 Caprice Brougham V8 Survivor with 20.000 original miles... buyed from first owner family.
All stock and only little things to do.
Most disturbing thing is the Choke light burned sometimes after cold start only.
Thanks for some contact to me from other boxy Caprice Fans and Chevrolet Fans...

This car has the code H Engine which means the Chevrolet Engine, not the 307 cui Oldsmobile Engine... 307 only in Station Wagons.
So I think, but I m not sure...
By the way I renewed the e-choke coil and the oil pressure switch but not the relay yet...
Who also of your guys have a stock 86-88 Caprice? Please feel free to write me your (choke) experiences :0)

Ok. If the motor is a Chevy, then a 350 should bolt right up. Just need the ECU to match.
Now, about the choke...are there any codes associated with choke light? Does the electrical connections and the wires look ok. Is there any corrosion on the relay terminals or any other terminals? What is the condition of the alternator and belt tension?

Choke continues
Also check the choke rod adjustment and make sure the choke valve opens freely. Check the choke coil setting. Make sure the fuse isn’t blown and have the battery and alternator checked as low voltage can cause the choke light to come on.

Alternator 2 years old. Belt ok. Choke is fixed in housing this years 1986-1988 because of a nose in housing, no twisting possible... Flaps and rod worked. Opens in 3 minutes.. Yesterday I found the Choke Troubleshooting in my 1988 Manual CD... Fuse - Choke Coil - Wiring - Oil pressure Sensor- choke heater Relay should be checked. After fuse, new coil and new oil pressure sensor the Relay is last chance maybe, but I did not found a report in Internet about fixing such problem at a 86 -88 Caprice with E4ME carburator and E-choke... Almost every MJ is different to solve the problem...
There is no problem at warm engine only after cold start... after 2-3 new coldstarts without driving sometimes the bulb goes out like normaly...

Choke
That’s weird...I know, not helping...I got nothing else except to drill out the rivets and replace the choke coil...you still have a relay to replace but this is just guessing now. You should be able to check the resistance of the choke coil and the relay with an ohm meter when it’s dead cold...

Choke problem solved
The problem was a faulty choke relay, located near the fuses taped at harness...
Hope someone is glad about this information, too :0)
The relay supports the choke and the choke light in dashboard with 12 V... the light so gets two Voltages, now from two (!) fuses and shut off when engine running.
