Hello from Montana
Good day, having troubles with our 2004 Avalanche 1500 5.3
Doing a google search I see that it is a common problem, but have yet to find a solution after hours of searches.
The problem started with the "battery not charging" light coming on. My first intuition was that the alternator was going bad. A few days later the light came on again and I watched the voltage meter gradually drop to nothing within 30 minutes of driving. Replaced the alternator, it tested bad at CARQUEST, and installed the new alternator.
Still having the same problem, "battery not charging" light still on and the voltage meter gradually drops. I even removed the new alternator and had it tested at CARQUEST.
A voltmeter reading showed that it was working properly as well.
Hopefully I can find a solution on this forum.
Thanks, have a good day.

welcome to the forum
Head over the truck sections and give them a read, you may find the information in the Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban section as well as the Avalanche area as they all have ~ the same electrical system/engine configurations....
Please do follow up with what you find
I suspect you have a grounding issue with the battery cables and or the engine to body ground strap.. if any appear corroded stiff or swollen replace them...
Also check the connections at the alternator as well as the bolts that hold the alternator in as that is part of your ground system...
