No charging 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500 pickup 5.7
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. My truck isn't charging.
I'll try to give all information. I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado K1500 pick up 4wd 5.7
A few weeks ago I sent my ECU/ECM to a place to get the VATS passlock 2 anti-theft delete. What an awesome service. I stumbled on it trying to find a passlock 2 module. I was/am very happy to get that done to it. The VATS system sucks in my opinion... It was charging perfectly before I sent it off. (Right!!? Lol.. )
I got it back Thursday and put it on Friday.
And since it was sitting without running for a couple weeks I started it and left in unsupervised to run for a while in the driveway. I went to check on it about 15 min in and it was purring away so I left it for another 20 min or so. When I went back out to check on it, it was dead. And battery had ran itself down to about 10 volts. So I charged it up over night and checked it out the next morning.
Battery checks out great (red top optima) but I'm get no output at all from alternator.
I checked the fusible link wire and that is good. And Checked every fuse because I didn't want to go through taking alternator off of it was just a fuse.. but all fuses, and ground wires are good. I took alternator off and took it to O'Reillys because that's where this one is from. But they bench tested it and said it continually tested good. So weather they gave me a new one or I took this one back, the outcome would be the same...
So I brought it back home and put it back on the truck and am back to no charge no output from alternator.
So testing the wire that goes from battery to alternator it is same voltage at battery and alternator constantly. And just slowly drops voltage at both ends the same as the truck runs.
I tested all fuses and the all look good. All ground wires look good...
Is there something else that I'm missing? Ignition switch? I did message the guy that did the VATS delete. He said the charging system and VATS system doesn't overlap...
Is the charging system ECM controlled on these trucks?
Is there something else I can test, like the ignition switch? If so how can I test it? Any other ideas to check? I'll go back over the ground wires again tomorrow and fuses also ..
Thank you for any help you can give me.
