I think its plausible.
Hell, I run a 2000 watt generator on the boat and it only burns 1 gallon per 6 hours on a 1600 watt load.
Say if a 2000 watt generator could power an electric motor big enough to power a car on less than 2000 watts, that equates to about 300 miles on one gallon of gas that the generator uses. I'm sure the charging system on the Volt probably takes a much bigger generator, so it drags it down to 190 miles on one gallon, plus the 40 miles it can run on straight electricity. 230 miles on one gallon.
I know it sounds irrelevant, but its one way of thinking.

This seems way beyond what our current technology can produce. But if it is true, then ship me one this instant. If this was true, then why isn't all over the news?
