Hennessey has a proud history of tuning high-performance machinery from General Motors and taxing it out onto Grand Parkway, a new stretch of toll road on the outskirts of Houston, Texas. That's what it did with the Cadillac CTS-V, spooling its twin turbochargers until it cracked 220 miles per hour. It did the same with the Corvette Stingray, feeding it nitrous all the way up to 200 mph. Now it's time for the new Chevy SS.

Fitted with its HPE600 Supercharger upgrade, Hennessey took the Bowtie muscle sedan out onto the closed-off section of Texas toll road to help state officials test out their new TxTag system and ran it all the way to 163 mph. Is that all, you ask? Hennessey points out that, even with the modifications, Chevy will only allow the SS to run to its top speed in the fifth of the six gears available. So while it might very well be capable of going a lot faster, until someone figures out a way of deactivating that speed limiter, 163 will be its V-max.
